Alpha-Stim is a hand-held device that utilises Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) to reduce anxiety. It uses a mild microcurrent, similar to the type and amount of electricity naturally occurring in the brain, which it transmits through small clips placed on the earlobes. This microcurrent, so tiny it is almost imperceptible to humans, is transmitted to the brain where it modulates specific groups of nerve cells resulting in significant stress and anxiety relief.

At HDC nervous patients can choose to use our Alpha-Stim machine during their dental appointment but we also recommend attending 20 minutes earlier to start using the Alpha-Stim to maximise the relaxation benefits. Patients are allowed to do so in a private, quiet room.

The Alpha-Stim machine can be turned up from 1 – 5 at the patient’s discretion, similar to titrating a drug, depending on their level of anxiety and their response to the Alpha-Stim.

We charge a private fee of £30 per session to use the Alpha-Stim but it can be used in conjunction with NHS or private treatment.
